A Place Where We Can Share

Hi Folks;

This blog is for folks who own Dayspring Poodles, a place where your many lovely photos can be posted

and enjoyed by us all who have Dayspring pups. Also a place where folks who have never seen how beautiful a natural poodle can be, one who’s tail has not been amputated. Also a pup who can spin on a dime because he/she still has a thumb(dewclaw) to grip the ground with on those high speed turns. I hope this Blog will help you to accustom your eyes to a natural look.

I, Katrina Schumacher breeder of the Dayspring CKC registered poodles in Central Alberta Canada am hoping that this Blog will be a great place for us to get to know each other and our special pups.

A fun place for young children (my grandchildren) and those of you who have family who enjoy looking at beautiful pictures of poodles (and other pooches) enjoying their lives doing many differant things as well as being home companions.

If you have a Dayspring Poodle and would like your photos posted and this site seems too daunting for you to post them yourself… please forward them to me along with your comments.

To All Visitors thanks for coming by, grab something to sip, plan to stay a while  and please leave some comments….those always encourage more posting of photos.

Blessings,

DAYSPRING A LIFE OF ELEGANCE

ELEGANCE a lovely lovely golden red who now is companion to my four grandchildren at Prince George BC. Canada

From the time Elegance was a wee puppy I could tell that the best match for her would be with a family with young children…Elegance was so drawn to babies and toddlers.

I live 9 hours from Prince George, and inspite of the distance wanted to show Elegance in Conformation, my daughter Belinda was good at brushing and keeping up her coat until she was almost a year of age. Elegance came back to live with me for some months while Belinda was devoting more time to her fourth little one Lydia born in October 2007… so I have a few pictures of Elegance in show coat. Calvin, Baillie and Geneva  were missing their pooch, and I could tell Elegance was missing them, so off came the big hair and back to Prince George she went to family life.

My sister, Patrice, is crazy about Bouboulina.  She has a miniture poodle now.  6 years old.   She’s always had poodles but it would be her first standard.  Bouboulina had a 2 month growth spurt but seems to have organized around this height and weight although I’m quite sure she’ll get somewhat bigger.  She weighs just under 31 pounds now and is approx 21″ tall.
She’s beautifully proportioned and if I must say myself, the most popular dog in the neighborhood.
I’m sorry to hear about the loss of your father.  Warm memories helped me through my grief and I hope you have the same.
Sending best happy wishes,
Tommy J

Dear Katrina,
Elegance is lovely!  She appears more mature than Bouboulina.  Lighter in color as well.
I was wondering what number clipper blade you use on her body and what number on her face?
Also, Bouboulina’s coat appeared dry and brittle after her last shampoo/grooming.  We suspect that the PH was too high for her.  Also, her coat is thick and I was wondering if there was a mix of her puppy coat and mature coat?
What shampoo do you use on Elegance?
We had a little birthday party for Bouboulina on Dec 10th.  I only have 2 photos but thought you’d like to see them;
The woman on the right in red is a dear friend who just adopted and saved a standard poodle from a puppy mill.  It’s atrocious what they did to that dog.  Cut it’s vocal cords so it can’t bark among other things.  The young girl holding Bouboulina is a friend from the Phillipines who walks her on occassion.

Dear Katrina,
Congratulations!  Beautiful puppies.
Thanks for sending the photos.  I’d love updates if it’s not inconvenient.
Bouboulina is doing wonderfully!  She gets better every day.  Tonight there were fireworks in Central Park (I don’t know why?) and they were loud and colorful.  Well, she stuck her head out the terrace door, to see what the commotion was all about, tail tucked between her legs, and quickly backed right back into the apt.  She’s an adorable scaredy cat.  She’s asleep now with her head on my bare feet as I type.  She’s very affectionate.
She gets groomed next monday.  I’ll send you some pictures then.
Hope all goes well with you and yours
Very best
Tommy J

Affirmed was owned, raced and bred by my sister and her husband’s Harbor View Farm.  He was a truely great Race Horse.

My father, Hirsch Jacobs, was a well known horse trainer who owned quite a few top thoroughbreds (in my mother’s name) and was often America’s leading trainer.  Here is a favorite photo of them leading Stymie into the winner’s circle.  Oddly enough, it appeared on the cover of the newly published Texas Thoroughbred.  Odd because none of our horses or family members have ever been in Texas.

This photo was taken after Stymie won the 1st International Gold Cup.  1947.  He was retired as the leading money winner of all time.

DAYSPRING AN ELECTRIFYING LIFE #1

Boo Boo as she is affectionately called by her owner Thomas Jacobs of New York City.  While she was with me at the Ranch I called her Electra…the smallest female. She would lay on top of Radzi the teenage Borzoi Pup and I will post that here for you later… I really missed her, she was my favorite little girl. So glad though that she has a wonderful life at a Penthouse in NY USA.

Crate-Training

Boo Boo preparing for her flight out of Canada, part of that is becoming familiar with her Airline Crate. Treats, and new toys are given to help with this adjustment of being confinded in a small space.  An Airline Crate is also very useful for house training, or just plain making sure that a new puppy is not chewing something, they ought not, while you are busy. Young dogs should not confined longer than they are months in age at first.  It is important to have often potty breaks and fun time. This also helps them to know that they will be allowed out in time to go to the outdoors for pottying.  Most folks have commented on how clean my pups are, and how easy they are to house train. This is because they are never left too long in their crate and given up and dirtied it.  Also, my dayspring pups are not paper trained, from five weeks on they are taken outside to releave themselves…

Dear Katrina,
Hope this reaches you in good Health & Spirits.
I just recieved Bouboulina’s Registration papers.
(suitable for framing)  Thank you.
Funny that it should come now as she’s being spayed on Wednesday, June 25th 2007.  It’s kind of upsetting for me to have her spayed.  She’s such a wonderful girl that I’d like to pass on her bloodlines.  But, it’s not to be.  Just don’t have the knowledge or facilities to breed her and as I said from the beginning, I never intended to breed her.
But what a wonderful dog.  She gets better every day.

Have you heard from others who bought a puppy from that litter?  I bet they’re very happy too.  People ask me all the time where she came from and I enjoy telling them about you and to go to your website.

I’ll be very interested to hear about your upcoming litters of Red Poodles.

Take very good care,
Best happy wishes,
Tommy J

DAYSPRING CAPTIVATION IN RED #1

Nellie refected in Mirror

Nellie refected in Mirror

Nellie now lives in Sweden with her family the Horkebys. Nellie is now in a beautiful european show clip, done up by her owner Magnus. Nellie is now also a part of a interesting Poodle family. Stunning beauty Nova, handsome Nox and little toy poodle Nitro

One of Helena’s early emails about their life in Sweden.

9/22/2007

Thank you for the pictures of lovely Nellie.

Anyway, I just wanted to send you a mail to know a little bit more about us.

We took some pics during our morning walk in the woods and went by Magnus grooming parlour on the way home.

Our home is surrounded by woods and small lakes and the dogs just love to race around playing.

Magnus has our dogs with him every day and they go for walks 2 -3 times during the day and then in the evening.

Next to the parlour there is a dog’s day care center, just opened, two very nice young girls are taking care of about 20 dogs.

Magnus turned his hobby into profession about two years ago and are very busy now as many poodle owners like to have their dogs groomed by him.

I work as a speech and language pathologist with children who can’t speak. They are usually severely handicapped both in motor functions and in cognitively.

My speciality is AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) which means to communicate with other means than speech. It could be sign language, pictures and computers.

Magnus has one daughter, Josefine, that lives with us half time. She is SO looking forward to the new poodle. Josefine is 15. My son, still living at home, is 20 and has just started his first year of five at the University. He’s studying computer technology. He is mildly interested in anything except playing computer games and chatting over the internet, but he is a nice boy.

The poodle part of the family is Nox, Nova and Nitro. Nox was our first. He is 4 years old and dark black. He’s father is a white Australian import that is a multichampion.

Nox is extremely intelligent and needs lot of stimulation or else he finds out something to do on his own. Not always good things J. He loves squeaking toys and agility, in that order. Squeaking toys goes before anything else. We have had him in all kinds of clip but this suits him best. He has one certificate and we don’t plan to show him any more as he’s forechest and chin is not strong enough and he has a bit to long back.

Nova was second. She is after a sire imported from Canada. Dawin You Betcha.

He is a multichampion owned by Anders Rosell who is handler and co-owner of Avatar Concorde.

Avatar Concorde is Novas grandfather, on her mothers side.

Nova is our princess. She doesn’t like wet grass and loves to sleep in the bed. As lacy as she might seem she also loves to jump around in the woods.

Nova is a bit famous to. She has been acting in a modern dance show, in a play on an outside theatre, in commercial adds and in TV shows. She just loves the attention. We hope to show Nova a bit more and hopefully get a championship on her and we are planning to breed her when the time is right and we find a suitable sire.

Nitro is our little white toy boy. He is 2 years old and are just under the limit for toys which I think is great.

I don’t much enjoy the teacup sized. He is just a really happy fellow. He’s only fault is that he’s barking to much but

I guess he has to tell everyone where he is. As you can see he spends a lot of time on my lap. Nitro was playing a part in the same dance show as Nova.

We are looking forward to more pictures.

Now Magnus and I will be off for some gym training.

Hope to hear from you soon again

 /Helena

Did you get my previous photos of the dogs playing? Max loves his

hair cut, and I love his tail. He is just as enthusiastic about

agility as the terrier and equally as fast now that he isn’t wearing a fur coat in 90 degree weather!! And I think he will be very

dependable. He is responding well to Rally off leash and he is

smart in ways that do not require training. If he needs something he

finds one of us, me if I am home, Pat if I’m not. If we forget

Bridee’s elec. collar and she crosses to the yard next to us he comes and gets us. When she comes back he scolds her. I don’t need an elec. collar for him. But, when I’m out I have to put a leash on him when he alarm barks because he would chase a coyote and that

would be dangerous. Bridee wouldn’t, she looks to him and to me for

protection!  Kay

DAYSPRING CELTIC MAGIC IN RED #1

Rowan Yellow Collar

Rowan Yellow Collar

**ROWAN** (bright yellow ribbon) is in the middle of this picture along with her four sisters. She has three brothers.  Rowan now lives in North Carolina USA, she left the Ranch on September 11th 2008 for her new home.   I look forward to hearing of her accomplishments as a K9 Sports Poodle.

March/29/2008

Katrina,

I am a 46 year old single mom living in Chapel Hill, NC on a fenced acre, with my 13 year old son Jesse, a standard poodle ‘Brenna’ and ‘Jamie’ the border terrier.  I also have 4 cats that share our life.  I am active in Carolina Pet rescue which is run by a veterinarian friend of mine.  We only rescue exotics, not cats or dogs.  There are usually some ferrets, guinea pigs, birds, reptiles and such here as well.  My poodle and border can’t wait to see what is in each carrier I bring home, they think that they are all for them to mother and play with.  Occasionally I hand raise orphaned kittens until they are old enough to go to a regular foster home.  Being one of the crazy people who does not mind getting up every 2 hours to feed babies there are usually a litter or two around during the spring and summer months.  I am a former groomer (20 + years), I had my own shop in California, but it just got to be to hard on my body.  I am now a vet tech working for a local vet clinic here in Chapel Hill.  I work 3 days a week and the animals are only ever alone for a few hours while my son is at school.  We hike alot, swim at the lake, and camp during the warmer weather.  We spend most our time at home where we work in our studio and vegetable garden.  The only vacations we go on are ones that include the dogs, but I must admit it’s hard to leave home with so many animals around.  I was raised on a horse farm in upstate New York and have never gotten over the need to have creatures all around.  My home is pretty much a recovery station for small animals in need of better homes.

I have owned standards for 16 years.  The one that I have now is one that I bred my self whose father was an agility dog from San Diego California.  My ex has her mother whom we miss dearly.  Brenna is a smaller dog only 38 lbs, who is very athletic and joyful, but refuses to leave my side for agility work.  She is totally focused on me to the exclusion of all else.  An awesome obedience dog, just not into agility.  We had planned on showing Brenna but due to the divorce and moving we did not manage to find the time.  We are now settled and secure in our new home in the forest, and we just don’t seem to know what to do with only 2 dogs, somebody always has to sleep without a dog and these two are inseparable.  Jamie is an adorable little girl whose father was # 1 winning border terriers a few years ago in the US.  She is great fun, but not in the same class with a standard.  Standards are just the most human like creatures ever.  When I got my first standard poodle (he was a Wisperwinds on a Carousel grandson) my family laughed at me, Kim with a poodle.  Did not take them long to see what attracted me to the breed.  They are the best of all four legged companions I’ve ever had.  I used to do archaeology work for the Navy and they went with me every time I was out in the field.  They were always well behaved and much enjoyed by everyone.

My son has dark red hair and silly but the thought of a red poodle has kind of stuck in our heads.  Many of the reds are big and rangy looking but yours are gorgeous.  We are partial to females but will consider a male if it the right one.

I would be happy to give you the names and numbers of a couple of vets that I’ve worked for (previous and current clinics) and I am sure that they will give me an excellent  reference.  I spend more money on my animals and the rescue than I do on either my son or myself.  Don’t tell him though, he thinks he’s pretty spoiled.

Our long term goal is to buy a bigger piece of property and raise Alpaca’s.  We have a dedicated fund in our budget for this plan.  Eventually the poodles and ourselves will live with a bunch long necked poodle like creatures.  All will have even more room to run and explore.

Now you know a little about us.  Please let me know what else I can share with you and I would be happy to provide references as well.  I am a dedicated animal person, as you may see animals are my life.

ROWAN

Rowan among the Bears

NOTE: from Katrina Schumacher, I forgot that Kim had mentioned in her first little note to me that she would like Conformation as well as K9 Sports prospect in Red .  So as I watched the pups develope, I looked for the most athletic most adventourus pup…and that was Rowan (yellow collar) she did everything first, was the bravest… next to her was (dark pink collar) who is now Razzmatazz (sister who is now in Texas)  Kim had mentioned she needed a pup that was not a leg hugger ( brother Flynn is a leg hugger) someone who would be able to zoom around an agility course later…  Rowan has a nice big white spot on her chest that will keep her out of AKC conformation….but I bet Kim and Jesse could show her in UKC which does allow Partis in their classes.  I’m very pleased that Rowan has done such a good job of being a special pup to Kim and Jesse that they now want a full sister; a  show female from Phoenix’s next litter… Thanks Kim for that confidence.

I have more pictures to edit of Rowan while here at the Ranch, that I’ll place in here later..

Katrina,

Thanks for thinking of us !!  We love Rowan, she had her shot today and inter-nasal kennel cough.  We are deworming her  through 16 weeks as standard protocol, and starting her on heartworm prevention (we have LOTS of mosquitoes).

Nobody wanted to stay still for pictures and it was getting dark, but here are couple that were not too blurry.

Will try to get better pictures and send them this weekend.

Again, I can’t thank you enough, Rowan is well loved by all !!

heal this family’s heart which was aching from the loss of their older Cream Male Poodle… I think Charlie is doing a good job.

9/8/2008

Dear Katrina

Thank you so much for the pictures, particularly the family picture which came out extraordinarily well. Jeanne is using it as background for her computer monitor. The picture with Mimi is priceless. Mimi is still avoiding Charlie but is getting a lot braver and has expressed some interest in him. It appears to me that the major issue is that she has no idea what to do with a puppy. I think we just need to let her take her time and get used to the fact that he is here to stay.

Charlie is fitting in very well. He has become more and more active by the day, and is exploring every nook and cranny he can. The parts of the house that he knows are travelled with authority, but we have noticed he has a marked preference for the outdoors and now leads us to the door when he needs to go out. The girls have spent a good amount of time playing with him in the backyard.

I have had him on a few short walks on lead and seems to take to that quite naturally, although I can see he will be a leash biter as he gets a bit older. I want to get Charlie to the point where I can take Mimi at the same time as him occasionally, even if the walks are very short.

Walking dogs together can make them feel like a pack and might help Mimi accept him better.

So far, there has not been a single accident in the house. While we have been very vigilant in watching him, I think much can credited with the way he was raised. This is unlike our other experiences with puppies.

Charlie’s first night was rather noisy, but the second night was quite the opposite. – an initial short fuss and then quiet right through the night.

Charlie’s eye appears to be be better. We do not notice the earlier watering, and we have been manipulating manually as instructed. I take him to the vet tomorrow and I can get another opinion then. I will keep you posted.

Thanks

David

DAYSPRING LIVE LIFE TO THE MAX #1

Call name Max owned by Kay Acres of Moses Lake Washington USA.

Kay wanted a poodle for canine sports and to be a companion to their energetic Irish Terrier Bridee.

Kay also wanted a poodle to match in color to Bridee.

I am hoping Kay will come to the blog, correct my spellings and give thoughts on her boy and some new pictures as he competes in Agility.

Kay has faithfully sent pictures for the last 17 months… I’ve saved all her letters so can add some of her earlier comments with the pictures once they are loaded here.

This is Bridee enjoying herself out in the scab lands which may have been formed by megafloods many thousands of years ago! I watched a special on T.V. last week about this area. I am looking forward to picking Max up on Friday afternoon at the Abbotsford Airport. I saw a standard poodle compete in Agility at our Fairgrounds this weekend. They put the jump bar to the top and it cleared all the jumps by 3 feet. The owner, an older lady who handles the dog, gave me a card with the name of the breeder who you
would likely recognize and now I can’t find the card. I think they
were Tudor poodles!! Kay

Also, Max is finally home! We stayed with my daughter in Bellingham Friday night, and my mother-in-law in Seattle on Saturday and Max was a perfect gentleman. Did you house train him? He is housebroken and hasn’t made a single mistake. Right now he is passed out behind me as I type this to you with Bridee only feet away. They are good together. She runs to him when he barks a little and sniffs him over. When they were running across the back lawn she body checked him and was a little rough so I told her to be gentle and she backed off. Do you think I should watch out for him for awhile? Does he need any more vaccinations before I take him to obedience classes? They are going to be good together in the kennel and I love his disposition. Thanks for the great little pup. Kay

Max, enjoying the lake view! He watches me and stays with Bridee and doesn’t need to wear an e-collar. I wouldn’t do that to him until he was well established in his new home in any case. I have taken him out on the trails twice and he was perfect. He tries to follow Bridee, but she is too quick for him right now! They play together, but are quiet in the kennel and in the pen area in the house. Bridee has calmed down, and Max is trying to jump like an Irish!! Everyone loves him. Kay

 4/18/2007

Thanks for the information regarding Max’s registration. I’m glad I’m not foaling mares and good luck with the calving. I took Max to the vet to get his vaccine and he had no problems. I asked the vet to weigh Bridee too and was surprised to find that she weighed 26 pounds

and Max weighed 24 pounds 9 ounces. She is lean and muscular.

They are quite the pair!! Here they are running through volcanic ash

from Mt. St. Helens because Bridee started a game with a stick. I

come home at noon to let them out of their run and feed them. And I usually take them for a half hour run on the trails in the morning

and also after work. Bridee and I will make sure that Max is fit.

Bridee runs hard for the ball whenever I have time to throw it, but

Max is not particularly interested unless he can grab the ball from her. I don’t remember when Bridee became interested in retrieving – maybe it was when she was a little older than Max. They are opposites and I like that. He is a great little pup. Kay

“Where’s Waldo?” Look closely and you will see Bridee in her characteristic pounce which she uses when she flushes out birds during our morning walk. Quite amazing – she will do a series of pounces sometimes jumping four or more feet in the air! A
combination of cat and gazelle! She is quite obedient and Max
copies her which is nice. She did a really good job at our last rally practice. Maybe she was showing off for Max!! She has calmed

down and changed since Max’s arrival. He is a popular boy, and they

look good together, and are good together. Did I tell you that I talked to a poodle owner at the dog show who knew the Minaret Poodles. They said they are bred for health and performance and one of their older poodles was a Minaret Poodle. They asked me the name of Max’s mother, but I didn’t know. They said I would love my poodle and I do. Actually the different abilities and personalities of the

two dogs is fun. I will look into getting another microchip. Kay

What a good boy!! Patty used a cutter Vac?? I told her not to pull the hair in his ears! Today I put an e-collar on him because he went over to the neighbor’s yard. He was a little distressed, but soon forgot about it and was off playing with Bridee. I’ve been trying to watch him to prevent him from running through when he gets too close. Bridee is perfect with the collar and I think he will be too. It is safer for him to be trained to it. Bridee is as playful as Max and makes up all sorts of games for him. The only time he shows much interest in a ball is when she teases him with one!! They really are a good match. He is doing very well and seems bonded to Bridee and to me. Pat is having to make an effort to get his attention! He really likes both Bridee and Max and is impressed with
Max’s disposition. Actually he is amazed. Everyone likes Max and

he looks great with Bridee. He isn’t as red as he looks in this photo. I hope you are enjoying spring! Kay

How much should I feed him? I am giving him about 1 cup three
times a day, but I add egg, meat, vegetables and some broth to this.
Tonight they played together for over half an hour! Kay

Max is now retrieving for me (eagerly)! I took this photo yesterday
when we were out hiking! We startled two deer a couple of days ago and Bridee ran after them, but she came back to me when I called
her. Amazing. I was very happy about that!! We were really close

to them. Max just stayed with me which was great. Hope everything is going well for you. Kay

I helped clip Max and I will take a photo of his “new look” to send. This past weekend we took both dogs to Penticton and stayed in the Lakeshore Motel on the lake!! They were fun to take along. Max is a
“protector”!! Max & Kay

Looking Fierce

Looking Fierce

6/25/2007

“Max” looking fierce! I wouldn’t want to go up against those teeth! What a character he is, and very bold, quite different from the female – a perfect match in color and personality. They don’t hurt each other and he lies beside her and puts his big furry paw over her shoulder. So peaceful for a short while and then away
they go full speed. I took them both to a beginner agility class.
Max is super cooperative, and eager. I won’t do much with him as he is too young. For awhile he was acting like a guard dog, but the more I get him out the quieter he is becoming. I am also taking him to obedience classes. Bridee is old enough for agility so I will work with her more. She will do anything for a ball and has a good recall so I think she will do OK and like it. I like it and it is exercise. Kay

Katrina, I am really pleased because Max is really interested in Bridee’s balls!! I take him out separately like you suggested, and you’d think it was the most exciting game. I throw the balls three or four times for him, and not too far, and he brings them back. I alternate the balls. Then I take Bridee out and let her tear after the balls for awhile. Last night I took the dogs over to the State Park where there is a huge lawn area and big trees for shade. There
was no one else there as it was 8pm.   Bridee will sit or down
and stay so I can work with Max. I can walk about 100 yards and

call her and she runs flat out to me. I think she is pretty safe

off leash, but I watch for other dogs or people. It was cooler

there and Max loved it. When I was asking him to “down” he was flopping down and being silly. He pulls his lips back and has a silly grin – it is really cute!! I just checked on them and found a big hole on my pathway – guess who had dirt on his feet! He got a correction and I put him out in the kennel by himself for five minutes. Bridee was concerned by his yipping, but I wasn’t!! I filled it in somewhat and tomorrow I will fix it. Just wanted to let you know he is getting along really well and starting to feel at home. This morning when I was out with the dogsI saw fifteen or

sixteen white egrets mixed in with the flocks of cormorants. Kay

Happy Mother’s Day Katrina! We walked for two miles and both dogs went right along beside us. Pat took “Max” and he was very good. I want him to bond to him too. Kay

Max on ahead

Max on ahead

6/30/2007

Hi, Max was charging down the trail ahead of us today. I had to keep calling him back. There were a lot of deer tracks and I think he was hoping to see something!! I took a photo of a deer on the way
home and neither of the dogs saw the deer (I didn’t point them out).

Max is changing into a pre-adult in his look and his behavior. Does he look like his father? Kay

NOTE  from Katrina, Max looks much like his grandmother in Finland, Fin’s mother a rich apricot.

7/29/2007

Getting acquainted with “Lily” 15 months – my youngest granddaughter! Max is growing and lively. I tried to get a photo of Max and Bridee to send you, but it is too hot out and Max just kept looking at me like I was crazy!! I boarded both dogs for a week when I went to Canada. They were excited to see me but seemed just fine.
I took them out for their first run this morning and about halfway out Max charged ahead a little too far so I called him back and put the leash on both of them. When I looked up, I saw a white tail deer bounding through the sage and grass in the distance!!

I wanted to know your opinion on feeding Max puppy food now that he is almost eight months old. I have had several dog people tell me I should switch to adult dog food as there is too much calcium in puppy food and Max is a big puppy breed. I am feeding Nutro. What do you think? Kay

NOTE: from Katrina  I have fed puppy food longer without any difficulties that I know of.

but do the research and settle on what you think will be best for your poodle.

I have entered Max and Bridee in Dog Rally at our show on April 12th and 13th! I volunteered at the Agility show this weekend and I took both dogs with me. It took Max awhile to settle down, but I took him everywhere I went – even when I was helping to tear down the course and he got used to it. We had 320 dog runs on both days and they ran dogs Friday as well. It was pretty interesting. There were two standard poodles competing and one Irish Terrier and they all did well. We had four inches of snow on Saturday – very unusual – so they were late starting.  Kay

Trimmed Ready ToGo

Trimmed Ready ToGo

4/14/2008

Max trimmed and ready for his show day. I hope his tail grows out quickly! Both Max and Bridee had good scores in their (and my) first Dog Rally competition this weekend. They qualified on both days. On the first day Max scored 92 out of 100 points. He lost points because I held his leash too tight through the serpentine, (I was
nervous) and he interfered with me on one of the circles. Bridee had 87 points – she lost 10 points due to handler error because I forgot to have her sit on the come front move! I also lost points for holding her leash too tight. The leash has to hang down with a curve the whole way. The second day both dogs had 99 points out of 100 until I moved my foot on the last task! (I wasn’t nervous, I just didn’t know to keep my feet absolutely still) That was a 3 point deduction for both dogs as I did it the same with each dog!! Max beat Bridee on time so he was third and she was fourth. They would have been first and second if I had done as well as my dogs.

Anyway, I was very pleased!! Bridee was entry number 14 and Max

was entry number 16. Max is a happy dog and he is going to be a great competitor. Bridee does what I ask, but would rather play. I might have a photo or two I can send. Kay

You might already have this. I’m just practicing. Max has his Rally Novice A Title. Now we move to the next level which is off leash. Kay

NOTE: from Katrina… Way To Go Kay you have the first Dayspring bred Poodle to gain that Title. Congratulations on your efforts. I’m sure Max has enjoyed the experience of learning from you.

Your photos are always good! I sent the pictures to an interested person and I also ordered some dermalustre to try on Max’s tail. I have been taking both dogs to agility lessons and the instructor, who has about 36 people she currently works with, said they will be ready for some agility matches by September! We’ll see how it goes. Both dogs have the best weaves of all of the dogs she works with. Thanks to my teaching them in the house and garage over the winter. Once they caught on I used the DVD “World Class Weaves”. I see that Max had a blond ‘uncle’ and except for his ears he appears to be blond rather than red. Do you think it’s the way he is groomed? I’ll try to attach a photo of him jumping in the sage brush that I took this
morning. He’s busy and very confident!! Kay

NOTE: from Katrina, Kay was talking of the pictures of Nellie (who lives now in Sweden) and will be posted here soon too.

11/28/2007 Max is now 11 moths old

Max is no longer coughing. I think he had kennel cough and it was awful. I’m sure it lasted longer than two months. He was hacking and then hucking up like he had a giant fur ball!! Sometimes he
would spit up white foam, but usually nothing came out. I’ve never

experienced anything like it. The Irish never got it, but she is older so maybe her immunity is better. Pulling on his collar made it worse so I bought a “haltie”. He wasn’t wild about it, but once he quit trying to rub it off it actually worked very well. He’s a great dog and the two dogs are super together. Pat told me that I hurt Max’s feelings all the time when I pay attention to Bridee!! Is that possible? I think I am equal with them, but I’ll be more

sensitive!! Do you think I should ask Patty (the lady who trims

Max) to trim his head down so it is the same length as his body? She only charges me $ 30.00 which I think is cheap so I have not attempted to do it myself. If I wasn’t working I might try harder to do him myself. Hope you are all well. Kay

NOTE: from Katrina. Good that Max finally is better two months is a long time to be coughing…. My red line of poodles are very possesive. I treat them like I would a human toddler, for they understand about the same…learn many words, just do not have the use of human language.  Good thing about poodle hair if you want to try a look and do not like it, just a few more weeks will give you enough hair to change the clip again.

“Max” the hunter! I have to make sure I put the leash on him when we start out, and then I have him heel off leash off and on while we are out. He loves to get his nose down and go! He has an awesome
recall when his head is up!!! Hope everything is good with you.

Thanks for the beautiful pictures of the female you are going to show. How is she doing? Kay

NOTE: from Katrina the pictures were of my grandchildren’s poodle Elegance, Max’s sister, who

was in a Puppy Show Clip… Elegance is now clipped down and resides full time with her young charges

at Prince George BC… Elegance will have pictures posted here at the Blog later.

Does Max look like his mother? He weighs about 45 pounds and is not

fat. I feed him Nutro – for big puppy breeds. Boy, you should see

him go – he runs down the trail so fast his hair blows back!! I

sent for his akc papers (about a month ago) and so far heard nothing. Both dogs stay in the yard, but I usually put the collars on just to be safe and I put them in their kennel when I’m not at home. How is your new litter doing? I’m back at work so it’s nice the dogs have each other – they are a good combination. Very polite with each other when they are kenneled and great play partners when they are out. Kay

NOTE: from Katrina here you can see in the photo that the squareness is returning to Max’s build has he

grows toward maturity at 14 months. Max is shorter backed than his mother, and a darker shade of golden red than Breanna. He is more like his European relatives in build.

OH NO SKUNK!!!!!

OH NO SKUNK!!!!!

7/4/2007

Yes, you did give me the site for his FinnEus relatives, but it is still hard for me to know who is who. I think he looks like Joiner’s Quality Iroko Ilana in color – would that be a grandmother? This is a photo from yesterday – Max being de-skunked! I used (1 bottle of peroxide, 1 quarter cup baking soda, 3 TBSP dish soap) I soaked him with water first and rinsed his eyes and mouth out! Poor thing was drooling and one eye was shut. Then I soaped him up with the solution and waited 5 minutes. He smelled much better, but now he has a blond head!! I think he may have stuck his nose under a baby skunk’s tail. The smell was distinct, but not horrendous. Bridee was not part of it and they are never too far apart. I was a short distance from him and decided I wouldn’t take a closer look. I didn’t want to put him in my car so I walked them home and went back for my car. This morning I saw a deer as I drove up to the sage brush area where we walk. It disappeared before I parked, but Max knew something was up and he was raring to go. Much to his
disappointment I put the leash on him for about ten minutes! Kay
